Over the past 60 years or so, Maxville has had three Chambers of Commerce. The first was incorporated in the early 1940s. This committee was instrumental in helping to found the Glengarry Highland Games.

The second Chamber was started in the late 1950s and played a major role in the establishment of the Maxville Manor.

Which brings us to the present Chamber. Officially, the Maxville & District Chamber of Commerce was formed on May 29th, 1991 at 8:00 PM in the Maxville Curling Club. However, it's unofficial beginning might have been an editorial that appeared in the April edition of the town's Centennial Newsletter entitled: MAXVILLE - 2091? One of the closing paragraphs went something like this...

Do we want to end up as another sleepy little hamlet...merely an annoying speed trap on the road to a more prosperous town? Or do we want a vibrant, growing community with employment, cultural, and recreational opportunities for ourselves and our children? The choice is ours!

As this excerpt shows, the editorial was a frank look at Maxville's economic decline. Not surprisingly, it caused a bit of a stir. More importantly, it also helped to draw concerned business owners, professionals, and interested citizens to the first meeting. And the rest, as they say, is history.

From the start, the primary objective of the Chamber has been "to promote and improve trade and commerce." And over the past ten years, your Chamber and its volunteers have been working very hard to honour this commitment.
